Wat Phanan Choeng

Before we left our hotel this morning, we took a small ferry across the river to Wat Phanan Choeng, a Chinese Buddhist temple.  Then at 9:00, we left Ayuttayah for Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve.

I am a few days behind in posting because of negligible internet signal. Photo uploads are very difficult now, but at least I was able to post this message. We are actually in Khao Yai National Park right now.  When we reach Phi Phi on January 11, connection should improve dramatically.

The ferry to take us across the river from our hotel to the temple.  We have everyone except the dog.

There he is... Jackson is on board.   Good boy :-)

We have to remove our shoes before entering the temple.  Evidently, there are shoe thieves, although the warning doesn't exactly make sense.

  Huh?

The Buddha image in this temple is huge.

Wat Phanan Choeng was built in 1324.  The temple contains a 19 meter high Buddha statue which is regarded as a guardian for mariners.  Legend has it that the Thai king requested the emperor of China's daughter for his wife.  When she arrived, the king wasn't there, so she held her breath and killed herself; thus, the king built this temple at her cremation site.

A series of bells is outside the temple.  You ring each bell to ensure that your prayers are heard.

Roti sai mai is a cotton candy like spun-sugar dessert.  You can see it in the bags in the foreground.  This woman is making crepe-like soft shells to put the roti sai mai in.

Clarke loves it.

  5. Was glad to see your post, Bryce had told us you all didn't have wifi where you were. We are so glad you all didn't find any snakes! I am sure Bryce was loving looking for them! Their birds are beautiful. Can't wait to see what you all get to do at your next destination.

  6. Cinderella temple looked cool- what amazing history. I’m glad Jackson was on board he looks like he’d be willing to doggy paddle to rescue an overboard passenger if needed. I like your new Thai pants grace.

  7. I must say I was very happy to see a picture of our daughter Natalie. Question: What type of metal are the budas made from? They look spectacular!!! And to think they were made in the 1300’s. Hope after ringing the bells that everyone’s prayers were answered :)

  8. Can't wait for better wifi so I can hear more about Dixie and all of your adventures! I was wondering why there didn't seem to be normal postings anymore. Makes so much sense! That temple looks beautiful still. That's great preservation.
