Faii gave us a presentation on the research they are doing with nest predation.
We went to a site where we cold see the national bird of Thailand, the Siamese Fireback.
Believe it or not, this is a wild species related to the domestic rooster. It's called jungle fowl.
Hiking through SE Asia calls for the use of leech socks. Terrestrial leeches are somewhat unpleasant.
Jacob thinks he looks good with shorts and leech socks. You be the judge.
On a walk through the forest, we came to the observation tower.
It was rather tall and extended above the jungle canopy. We think it's around 100 feet tall.
Faii is explaining how to band birds.
If you look carefully, you can see the mist net extending from the guy in the foreground on the right, to the people in the back. Lots of us almost ran into it because it is nearly invisible, which is exactly the idea so birds will fly into it. Unfortunately, we didn't get any birds, probably because our group was so noisy.
Here Fai is explaining what the colored tags on the trees mean. This is a huge research plot marked out on a 50x50 meter grid.
Later, we had a presentation by the King Team (king cobra researchers). Mike Mills (from St Louis!) is showing us how they use the radio tracking device. He was blown away that we were visiting from Mizzou.
They had two Burmese pythons in hand at the time. They have a vet surgically implant transmitters in the snakes and they will then track their movements after they are released into the environment.
This snake had a bad attitude.
Mike and Harry (from the UK) talking about snake ecology.
That night, they took us on a walk through the tropical forest and some grasslands looking for snakes.
Thank God we didn't find any.

You ALL are a brave bunch for going out on a night hike....in the jungle...in Thailand...to look for snakes! I would have gone beyond heebie jeebies!! Wow! And that said, I am kinda sorry you weren’t able to find at least one snake from a safe distance. That would have been really cool! Mackenzie...love how you are sporting your new Buff and of course, those snazzy leech socks ;) Keep enjoying all this! Love, Mom
ReplyDeleteThe leech socks are classic!! Morgan, I hope your mongram and neon laces helped everyone keep track of you!! The snake hunting at night, Yikes!
ReplyDeleteSo, this might be where you would have lost me. I would not have liked the 100+ foot tower and definitely NOT the snakes. I could barely stand to look at the picture of the one in the box, let alone thinking about them being loose around me YIKES!! Clarke.....where are your leech socks??? Jacob.....looking good buddy...not sure I would wear that outfit around campus though lol. Such a small world and how cool is it that you ran into someone working there from St. Louis. Did Clarke tell you that his aunt actually volunteered at an elephant sanctuary for several months in Thailand?? Thank you so much for all your pictures and entertaining posts....I look forward to reading them everyday!
ReplyDeleteAbby Schmidt I am digging the leech socks. Likewise, I am more than happy you guys did not find any snakes because that would be dangerous. I want you home safe. Keep learning chica.
ReplyDeleteAll very interesting! Did anyone climb up the 100 foot ladder to the top of the canopy? It looks like it! Yikes.
ReplyDeleteMackenzie.. this is so awesome! I have to admit that I am kinda disappointed that you guys didn’t find any snakes. I was sort of hoping to see more than the snake in a box, but I am glad that you had that experience. The tower.. did you go up? I would love to see a view from the top (because I wouldn’t go up). Stay safe out there. Dad
ReplyDeleteThank you for keeping us posted. I love the pictures and details from the day!
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure who made the leech socks, but thank you very much! Grace, too bad u didn’t have a snake encounter to share with your memaw
ReplyDeleteI was wondering when the kids were going to wear the leech socks!!! I can’t even imagine getting a leech on your body!!! Thank you so much for the updates. I look all the time. Pictures say a 1000 words

ReplyDeleteHey Dixie! Do you like snakes? I think they are super neat as long as it doesn't come after me, or I don't have to touch them. I would have been creeped put snake hunting at night!

Everyday is a new adventure and lots of memories to cherish for Abby S and all the students. Looks like the weather has been good for you, we have had some very mild spring like days here lately. But possibly gonna snow in New Melle this weekend. That jungle fowl looks just like one of my roosters. Keep the pics and stories coming, enjoying them. Aunt Tracey
ReplyDeleteLooks like the weather is nice there, I am surprised it isn't raining in the tropical forest, what an adventure to get to see all the animals that may not see here.
